The issue
When a leading global organisation took stock of its track record in project management, it realised that a wealth of experience was not leading to successful project delivery: every major division could point to failed and failing projects that held back progress. It was clear that those charged with project delivery had to be more adept across a range of areas, particularly managing the project process and the people involved.
The action
Working closely with a small team of senior executives, each with significant practical experience of delivering project success, we first created practical guidance materials. We then designed, developed and delivered a three-day experiential workshop for new and experienced project managers. As part of a challenging simulation, participants worked in teams to develop and implement a complex project, regularly checking progress and tackling any issues that arose.
The outcome
For experienced project managers, the workshop brought home the critical importance of clarity - both of project objectives, and the structure and management of project teams. For new project managers, the experience paved the way for using best practice to engage project teams and applying diligent control procedures over each phase.
